As previously stated, the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) announced June 15, 2016, its recommendation to deny continuing approval to the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), which provides accreditation to more than 200 colleges and universities nationwide, including Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing (BSMCON). On June 23, 2016, this recommendation was considered by the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) which voted to deny continuing approval to ACICS to operate as an accrediting agency.
On September 22, 2016, the US Secretary of Education rendered the final decision to withdraw DOE recognition of ACICS; however, the process to remove an accreditor’s authority can take nearly two years to complete as the accrediting agency files appeals and any legal challenges. ACICS has filed an appeal.
During the time frame of appeals, schools accredited by the accrediting agency remain eligible to continue offering federal financial aid to students. Once appeals are exhausted, the Higher Education Act provides for schools accredited by ACICS to have 18 months to offer federal financial aid and seek accreditation from another recognized accreditor.
Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing has been proactive in our approach to secure and finalize a new accreditor. The Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing (BSMCON) remains fully accredited with ACICS and continues its ability to provide all federal student financial aid programs.
