Student Spotlight: Flaklinda M.
BSN and Senior 1 student, Flaklinda Mehmeti, a refugee from the Kosovo war in 1999, has a compelling story. Born amidst the conflict as Serbia sought to take control of Kosovo, she and her family sought sanctuary in the United States when she was just five months old. Raised in an Albanian-speaking household, she witnessed her parents face the challenge of adapting to a new culture and language.
Currently, Flaklinda is a dedicated full-time nursing student at BSMCON and works as a patient care technician and as a pharmacy technician at St. Francis Medical Center. Balancing her academic and professional responsibilities is demanding; yet, she embraces this challenge with the support of her family.
Q: What motivated you to pursue a career in nursing?
A: My decision to pursue a career in nursing is deeply rooted in the profound experiences and challenges my family and I faced, particularly during the Kosovo war of 1999. Born into a world of conflict, I witnessed the resilience of the human spirit and the compassionate care provided by nurses during our arrival in America. This chaotic period instilled in me a deep-seated motivation to give back to a world that granted my family a second chance at life. Inspired by the strength of my parents, who overcame unimaginable circumstances, and fueled by the selfless care of nurses during our vulnerable moments, I am driven to be a source of support and care for others. This calling represents a profound purpose, and I believe that through a career in nursing, I can positively contribute to the world and make something truly meaningful of myself.
Q: Why did you choose BSMCON for your education?
A: I chose BSMCON for my education because they acknowledged my potential. The resilience I developed through multiple unsuccessful attempts only fueled my determination to keep applying. Despite setbacks, the College demonstrated confidence in my abilities, affirming that I am not only qualified, but also a valuable addition to their academic community.
Q: What has been your favorite experience so far at BSMCON?
A: My most cherished experience at BSMCON has been the unwavering support and guidance from my professors and staff. They have consistently challenged me and pushed me to realize my full potential. The dedication they exhibit in ensuring my academic growth and personal development demonstrates not only their professionalism, but also a genuine care for my success. These experiences have enriched my education and have also created a nurturing environment that fosters both challenge and support, contributing significantly to my academic journey.
Q: Have you had mentors who have helped and encouraged you during your time at BSMCON?
A: Absolutely! During my time at BSMCON, I've been fortunate to have so many mentors who have played a crucial role in my academic and personal development that I can’t even name them all! Their guidance has been instrumental in navigating the challenges of nursing education. These mentors have not only shared their wealth of knowledge but also provided invaluable encouragement, fostering my growth and instilling confidence in my abilities. Their support has been a cornerstone of my journey at BSMCON, and I am deeply grateful for the mentorship that has enriched my educational experience.
Q: How do you see your career as a nurse evolving?
A: I foresee my nursing career evolving dynamically and leaving a lasting impact. As I advance in my profession, my commitment lies in consistently refining my clinical skills and broadening my knowledge through continuous learning and professional development. A: In my nursing journey, I've been surprised to discover my resilience in facing challenges and a deep empathy that connects me with patients on a human level. What's astonishing is realizing that being a nurse goes beyond a profession; it's a profound calling. The intrinsic fulfillment derived from positively impacting lives has surpassed my expectations. These revelations continually shape my growth both personally and professionally.

A: My advice to student colleagues and prospective students is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. In the demanding field of nursing, each obstacle is a chance to refine your skills and deepen your understanding.
