Meisha Harris, a non-traditional student and single mother with two academic degrees, chose to pursue nursing after discovering her passion for it in high school. She obtained certification as a nursing assistant in 2007 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a master's degree in athletic training. However, her heart was drawn to nursing, so she applied to the competitive BSN program at the College of Nursing, stating that growth only comes from working outside of one's comfort zone.
As a second-degree student, Harris fully embraced the educational experience at the College of Nursing. She appreciated the diversity among her peers and connected with her professors and clinical instructors on a personal level. Her fellow nursing students were also supportive and created a strong bond within their clinical group.
Harris's clinical experiences were equally diverse and positive, as she gained valuable knowledge and skills from working at different hospitals. She believes that these experiences have prepared her well for her future career as a critical care nurse in the intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital, where she will be working upon graduation in May 2023.
In addition to her academic achievements, Harris also joined the national service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, and will serve as the chapter's president-elect. She hopes to inspire others to get involved and make the most of their time as students at the College of Nursing.
