Dr. Chris-Tenna Perkins Honored as 'Dean of the Year' by Virginia Nurses Foundation
Dr. Chris-Tenna Perkins, RN, campus director and dean of academic affairs at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing, was honored as ‘Dean of the Year’ by the Virginia Nurses Foundation for her outstanding contributions to nursing education. The prestigious award was presented Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Foundation’s annual gala.
Perkins was recognized for her transformative contributions and innovative leadership in curriculum development. Among her achievements is the creation of the "Beyond the Lecture" model, an approach that enhances students' critical thinking skills while providing greater flexibility in their learning environment.
She also launched the Good Start Development Program, an initiative that supports faculty in delivering education rooted in sound teaching-learning principles. Her leadership extends globally through the co-creation of the Global Outreach Program, which offers students educational experiences in Virginia, South Florida, the Caribbean, and study-abroad programs in France and Ireland. Plans are underway to expand the program to Kenya.
Perkins was nominated for the award by Dr. Melanie Green, RN, chancellor of Bon Secours Mercy Health Higher Education Institutions. "Dr. Perkins exemplifies what it means to be an innovative leader in nursing education. Her dedication to advancing both faculty and student success is inspiring, and her work is a testament to our commitment to excellence in health care education,” Green said. “It is an honor to celebrate her well-deserved recognition as 'Dean of the Year.'”
This recognition underscores Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing's commitment to advancing health care education and preparing the next generation of nursing professionals to live their purpose.
